Considering how egregiously bad the previous two episodes were, I don't know why I expected the Season 4 finale to be much good.
But I did, and I don't think it really was.
We could see Neal's dad being a guilty, lying piece of crap weeks and weeks ago. And if you didn't know for sure about this entering the finale, you probably should have when the first few minutes of 'In the Wind' were spent with Neal and Sam bonding -- it was a clear set-up for heartbreak later on in the episode.
We also knew that Amanda Callaway was in Senator Pratt's pocket, so her double-crossing Peter was another thing that was clear from the beginning. We also knew that when Peter kept insisting that he would have dinner with Elizabeth, that something big would get in the way of that.
But there's something much more important that we already know and it ruins the finale and any of the drama that came from the ending: PETER IS NOT GOING TO GO DOWN FOR THE MURDER AND ORDER WILL BE RESTORED, RETURNING THIS SHOW TO THE STATUS QUO.
And if the past is any indication, I'm sure 'White Collar' will manage to do so in about the first two episodes of Season 5.
Yawn.
Oh well. At least Mozzie got off some good lines and we got to see Neal and his gang up to no good, which is always entertaining. There was also a nice send-off (at least for now, I presume) for Sara and in a perfect world this would necessatate a new love interest for Neal next season.
Paging Alex Hunter. Please, 'White Collar', I implore you to bring back Gloria Votsis much more frequently in Season 5. She was barely around whatsoever this season and that is simply not acceptable. Plus, I feel like they have great chemistry together and are always fun -- whether they're working together or stabbing each other in the back.
Other than that, I also demand a better season-long arc next season. This one really, really, really didn't cut it. Can't imagine too many people thought it did.
Would love to know what you all thought of the finale.
QUOTES OF NOTE:
--REESE: "Sometimes you have to re-draw those lines to stay within them."
--SAM: "I'm Neal's Dad, you must be Kate! ...Oh, sorry, Alex!
--NEAL: "Dad!"
-- SARA: 'It's Sara."
--SAM: "The insurance investigator."
--SARA: "He shoots he scores!"
--MOZZIE: "Greetings, fellow conspirators!"
--SAM: ":God speed."
--MOZZIE: "Or whoever."
--NEAL: "You're gonna testify and you're gonna clear Peter's name. You show me you're better than this, you show me you're a decent man."
RANDOM RAMBLINGS:
--Other Mozzie gems: "no base-jumping!" and "drink more champagne, it improves cognition -- that's a proven fact!"
--Would Reese REALLY risk getting busted for tapping the FBI? And or what? Loyalty to Peter? Please.
--June and Neal are an awesome duo.
--Love Hilarie Burton, but is it just me, or does she look insanely skinny? Not that I should talk, considering I'm 5'11" and 147 pounds.
--The female agent in charge of escorting Peter out of the building should be fired. He slipped her so damn easily. How the hell did she ever become an agent?
--Whatever that thing that was flying the evidence is awesome.
THE GRADE: D+
(I'd say it was a 'C-' episode, but it gets downgraded because I expect more from a finale)
