Revolution Ratings Update (through November 19th 2012)

On November 19th, Revolution pulled in an Adult 18-49 Live + Same Day rating of 2.57. This was a bit of a stabilization from a slide it has been experiencing the last few weeks:

It's still winning its time period in this demo, unless you count ESPN's Monday Night Football. Hawaii Five-0 got a 2.24. Castle got a 1.98.

But, as you can see above from the comparison to some shows last year, Revolution is still holding its head well above water. It's interesting that the slide for Revolution started the night Superstorm Sandy knocked out power and many stations preempted programming. But, even when power returned for many, "same day" viewers didn't return to Revolution.

A lot of people are asking "what happened to everyone's ratings"?

A couple of things are happening. One if the rise of cable as a competitive force, particularly for younger demos. The NFL averaged a 4.8 last night. At 10PM, Teen Mom on MTV got a 1.4 A18-49 rating, but a 3.3 rating for Women 18-34.

The other competition is "stuff on your DVR". People are delaying their viewing more than ever. 10PM is an hour when people are watching stuff they recorded earlier. Thus, 10PM shows tend to get pushed to another night. Even the October 29th Revolution had a lift of 57% from Live + Same Day to Live + 7. Not even Nielsen knows how much viewing is getting pushed beyond seven days because that's when they stop counting.

Overall TV viewing is not down right now except for a small demo slice--Adults 18-24.  Other demos' viewing is not down.  It's just getting split into hundreds of tiny slices.

TV Timeshifting: Grimm, Supernatural, and Revolution lead in lifts for Week of October 1st, 2012

It's been a pretty bad TV season for the Live + Same Day ratings. But, it has also become more common for TV shows to get big lifts in their ratings beyond people who watched the day a show airs.

This hits science fiction and fantasy shows a lot. It also impacts many shows that air at 10PM and shows that rely on young audiences, e.g. Glee.

It's interesting to note that Revolution's lift to a 5.3 rating made it the #4 non-Sports program of the week. Only The Voice, Big Bang Theory, and Grey's Anatomy beat it.

TV Ratings 10/15/12: Revolution Ratings Rise 10%

In the last few years, the “major” networks have tried to make shows like The Event, Terra Nova, Alcatraz, Fast Forward, The River more than one-season shows and failed. Could Revolution actually succeed and make it to a second season. Its ratings have not only stabilized, but went up 10% in the A18-49 demo for episode five:

Here’s how a few other similar series faired over their first seasons. While it had an initial drop, it has stabilized:

In addition to these “same day” numbers, there are signs that even more viewers have this show on a DVR season pass and watch it on another night. We only have seen “Live + 7 Day” ratings from the first two episodes, but the Live + 7 Day lift for the 2nd episode was 66%. While the Live + Same Day rating went down 16% between episodes 1 and 2, the Live + 7 Day rating only dropped 3%.

We acknowledge that most of these viewers have little value to the advertisers paying for the show, some do get counted if they don’t fast forward through the ads.

BTW, Head Geek Furious called this show as a hit early on while many critics dismissed it.
Now, I wonder what NBC will do with Smash’s return in the winter. Will it get Revolution’s timeslot and Revolution will move?  Or will it be Smash looking for a new timeslot?

TV Ratings 10/1/12: Revolution Stabilizing as It Gets Full Season Order

Just as the final overnight ratings were coming in, the word got out on the Twitterverse that NBC has given full season orders to Revolution, Go On, and The New Normal. Revolution’s third week ratings showed signs of stabilization with only an 8% drop in Adults 18-49 from week two:

As you can see, Castle dropped 11% for Adults 18-49, but barely dropped at all for total viewers because viewers over 50 went up this week from last week. Castle’s median age was 60 years old. Hawaii Five-0, not shown above, had a 7% lift from last week to a 1.98.

Other positive news for Revolution is that NBC released its “Live + 3 day” ratings from last week and they showed a 50% lift from Live + same day. TV By the Numbers is poo-pooing the importance of Live + 3 day ratings, but times are changing. As some ratings watchers know, the shows are sold to the advertisers on their Live + 3 day commercial ratings (aka C3). All the shows that get higher C3 ratings than their Live + Same Day ratings have very high DVR lifts. So, when you see a show getting a high percentage lift for time-shifting, it’s likely good news for that show unless the show’s ratings are still very low. In my opinion, DVR lifts may very come into play for some "bubble show" decisions.

TV Ratings: Revolution beats Castle and Hawaii Five-0 in first battle on September 24th, 2012

In its second week, NBC’s Revolution faced season premieres of Castle and Hawaii Five-0. It beat both in the Adult 18-49 ratings. There was a 16% loss of Live + SD audience in that demo from its debut last week, but it definitely could have been worse and many thought it might be. The median age went down a tad. So, its losses for older audiences were a little bit higher.

Meanwhile, the hype about Castle and Beckett becoming an item did not produce a big ratings bump. It was actually down 35% in the key demo, but 21% for all viewers. The median age went up a few years and the percentage of male viewers went down. Thus, they probably kept more of their older female viewers than other demographics. In fact, 43% of Castle’s audience is women aged 55 or older. If you are a young dude watching Castle, you’re in the real Cougartown.

It’s notable that the Castle premiere didn’t even match last year’s finale number of 2.45.

Hawaii Five-0 seemed to take an even harder hit with a 42% decline compared to last year. It’s median age rose about three years.

We should acknowledge that all of these 10PM shows may regain some viewers when the Live + 7 ratings come through. A person has to watch by 3AM to count in the “same day” ratings. When so many shows compete, some shows are bound to get pushed to another day.

Other highlights:

• Fox’s Mob Doctor dropped to a sad 1.3 A18-49 rating from a 1.5 last week.
• CBS’s Partners scored a 2.4 A18-49 rating. That wouldn’t be bad except that it’s on CBS and it lost a significant 3.6 How I Met Your Mother lead-in and the show that came after it rebounded to a 3.7.
• NBC’s The Voice was the top-rated A18-49 show of the night—4.4.

TV Ratings: Revolution is Off to a Strong Start

NBC’s Revolution, which debuted on September 17th, 2012, got better ratings for its premiere than Terra Nova and Alcatraz did last season. Both of those shows failed to make it to a second season due to subsequent ratings declines during their first seasons.

Its debut Adult 18-49 rating was closest to the rating for ABC’s Once Upon a Time. That show survived to make it to a second season. It skewed a more female than Revolution did, though. As it was, Revolution came in at 45% Male/55% Female.

Revolution did have the benefit of three things. First, it got tons of promotion during the Olympics. Second, it had a strong lead in from The Voice, which generated a 4.7 rating last night. Third, it debuted a week before the “official” start of the season. Castle wasn’t on and Hawaii Five-0 was a repeat. They will have their season premieres next week. Last year, Castle had a 3.2 and H5O a 3.4 for their premieres. Next week, Castle will be coming off a season ending “cliffhanger” where Castle and Beckett finally “did it”. So, it could have a strong debut next week for the “morning after”.

Revolution may see its ratings decline in the coming weeks, but this is a good number to start with and leaves more room for possible declines. Personally, I liked the show and I want to see where it goes from here.

Incidentally, 89% of Revolution's viewers watched live.

Fox’s Mob Doctor didn’t even get interest for its first episode. It had a dismal 1.5 A18-49 rating.

2012-2013 PILOT SEASON - NBC: Review (Fall and mid-season schedule)

NBC may have the fewest viewers but they often have the best shows... that no one watches. In this upcoming season, they have picked up some interesting and some not-so-interesting shows, and at least one potentially great one.

Here are my quicky opinions on each.

Comedies

1600 PENN (mid-season)
A show about what it would be like if the president of the United States had kids who didn't know how to behave themselves properly. It is actually funny (though dumb) and instantly has likable characters. 87 out of 100

ANIMAL PRACTICE (fall)
SCRUBS meets season 2 of BREAKING IN meets animal doctors. It has a few fun moments and I suppose it could become funnier but the pilot is very predictable. A monkey steals the whole episode. 75 out of 100

GO ON (fall)
Horrifically realized show about a man dealing with loss, who ends up in a support group for people dealing with loss. There is virtually nothing original here --and when there is a dash of it, it feels contrived- and Matthew Perry is mostly unlikable in the role. Perhaps it gets better but this was picked up because of the star and nothing more. I can't see any way this will do well unless people really like depressive shows about a dude with a douchie attitude. 50 out of 100

GUYS WITH KIDS (fall)
Lame multi-camera laughtrack show about guys with kids, that is another NBC attempt at making bad CBS type television that interests the masses. I'm not sure the people who watch NBC will find this kind of thing interesting. Though I found it painful to watch, there is some fun chemistry/dialogue between the couple with four kids, but otherwise... lame. 60 out of 100

THE NEW NORMAL (fall)
I guess this is NBC's answer to MODERN FAMILY that has a somewhat ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT feel, about gay men finding a surrogate mother for their baby, with Ellen Barkin as a bigotted grandmother scene-stealer. A very good pilot episode that feels very much like something Ali Adler would write (after writing that I checked... she is one of the creators... man, I'm good). It has potential (though that scene in the park where people talk to the camera like they are making a commercial should be cut). I will be checking it out. 88 out of 100

NEXT CALLER (mid-season)
A show about a satellite radio show. The host is a caveman and the co-host is a liberated woman. Dane Cook's in it so naturally some will flock to it while others will never watch it and claim they saw it anyway and that it sucked. The second group would be closer to the truth. It's just not that funny... or well acted... and lacks likeable characters. 65 out of 100

SAVE ME (mid-season)
When a woman has a near-death (or death) experience with a sandwich, she turns from a psycho alcoholic to a sober and euphoric prophet of god. Very well acted. Too interesting for network TV and will likely die in the ratings because of it. 90 out of 100

Dramas

CHICAGO FIRE (fall)
The opening of this show, about rescue services, is so dumb it should be on CBS. The rest of the episode does get somewhat better but I can't seem to shake the feeling that these guys watched a lot of RESCUE ME and thought to themselves "this would be so much better if it wasn't as much fun!" The fire fighting scenes are exciting but you know subsequent episodes will be filmed for less money and therefor the fire fighting stuff will start to look cheap. 75 out of 100

DO NO HARM (mid-season)
This show is about a doctor who has a split personality problem. One personality is a seemingly nice guy. The other is bad boy who gets laid a lot and hurts people. The two can kind of see/feel the others' perspective but are distinctly different. It has that guy from RESCUE ME in the lead role and that chick from LAW & ORDER. I will be surprised if it does well on NBC. Should be on USA. Still, it is a very interesting show, especially when their worlds collide. 84 out of 100

INFAMOUS (mid-season)
A crime drama where the cop is old friends with the filthy rich people she's investigating. Blahblahblah. So bored. I'm sure someone will find it interesting, just not me. 60 out of 100

REVOLUTION (fall)
WALKING DEAD meets LOST minus the zombies and island. It feels epic. Great acting, music, pacing, writing, cinematography, story and whatever else goes into making a show awesome. Unlike some pilots where you are left thinking "this could be good once they get comfortable telling the story" this one feels excellent from beginning to end. J.J. Abrams (LOST, FRINGE) and Eric Kripke (SUPERNATURAL) may just have created the next big thing. Please, TV gods, let this be successful. 98.4 out of 100
